The International RS21 Class Association, in collaboration with RS Sailing and the JK BRIVA Sailing Club, is delighted to announce the inaugural RS21 World Championship will be held in the beautiful town of Biograd Na Moru on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast from the 3 to 6 November 2022.
Following on from a successful European Championships in Malcesine, Lake Garda last year, the International RS21 Class expects around 40-50 RS21’s to compete for the honour of being crowned the first RS21 World Champion. Entries are expected from Italy, France, Germany, Poland, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Australia and the United States, as well as the home nation, Croatia.
We spoke to Gianluca Grisoli, the driver of this Italian team, Beyond Freedom, to find out a bit more about his team.
“I’m the owner and driver of the Italian RS21 named Beyond Freedom. Growing up, I used to be a good Optimist and Laser sailor (best result was World Youth Champion in San Diego in 1984). In the past I have also owned a Platu 25, a Melges 24 and a J70. About RS21, we won the Italian circuit last year RS21 (this year we’re actually second before the last event, to be determined in the Italian championship in Puntaldia). We finished 2nd at 2021 RS21 Italian Championship and 3rd at 2021 RS21 European Championship in Malcesine, Lake Garda.
On board the boat we have tactician, Andrea Casale, a professional sailor, former Laser Champion, and North Sails Italy employee. As crew, we have Giorgio, a Tortarolo trimmer and professional sailor. Our bow is Chicca Salvà who is also a professional sailor and former 470 Olympic sailor.”
We know this will be an unmissable event, with great socials throughout the week. With a practice race on the Wednesday 2, sailors can expect to have as much fun onshore as they will on the water. With lots of social opportunities to rub shoulders with fellow sailors, the event will start with an Official Opening Ceremony on Wednesday evening and end in style with a Gala Dinner on the Saturday. To keep fair racing developing from last year, the International Jury will be afloat, acting as umpires to ensure more time is spent socialising onshore and less time discussing incidents on the water.
Entry to the event is €950, and charter boats will be available for €3,000 for those wishing to attend without transporting their boats. There are special offers available for those who book early.
